Interaction with Industry Experts and Release of Print and Lab Journals

An interactive programme with media professionals on the topic ‘Media Writing and Nuances of Production’ cum release of print and audio-visual lab journals was organised by the Department of Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies at Cotton University on April 10, 2024. The event was graced by Pro Vice Chancellor of Cotton University Prof. Ganesh Ch. Wary, Executive Editor of Amar Asom Shri Gautam Sharma and Managing Editor of NB News Shri Ritusmin Sharma. 

The event was organized with a two-fold agenda - firstly, the release of lab journals produced by the PG 2nd Semester students of the Department and secondly, to provide an opportunity to the students to interact with industry professionals and receive their valuable feedback on their outputs. 

The print lab journals Our Viewpoint and Amar Mot and audio-visual lab journals The Mirror and Daapon were released by Pro Vice Chancellor of Cotton University Prof. Ganesh Ch. Wary. In his inaugural address, he lauded the Department for this initiative and expressed the view that the country and the State has made great strides in the field of entrepreneurship. He hoped that this step would enable students to work in the industry. He stressed the need for the media to be proactive and play the role of constructive critics to foster democracy. The audio-visual bulletins were also screened on the occasion. 

Executive Editor of Amar Asom Gautam Sharma shared that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) data shows that Assam's journalism is ranked fourth in the country. He emphasized that focus should be on journalism in Assam so that it can take the first place. During the assessment of the print lab journals, he shared valuable insights on the use of appropriate words, syntactic structure in Assamese and English writing and news angles. 

Managing Editor of NB News Ritusmin Sharma shared insights on the current trends in news writing and presentation. He shared valuable advice on the importance of vocal stress and emphasis for news presentation, broadcast news writing vocabulary and style, delivery of stand uppers etc. He emphasized that along with Assamese and English, students should also develop their Hindi speaking skills as there is a huge demand for journalists from Assam in the national media houses. 

The event started with the welcome address by Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, Cotton University Dr Sayanika Dutta. She shared that these are the 30th editions of the lab journals produced exclusively by PG 2nd semester students of the department every year. 

The event was attended by faculty members of the Mass Communication department as well as Economics, Hindi and Statistics and the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the department of Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies of the varsity.
